There are two competitions within the event:
72-Hole Stroke Play (Professionals Only)
- Professional players compete in their own right for a professional prize fund, the winner being determined by the lowest overall number of strokes over the four-day tournament.
72-Hole Betterball Medal (Professionals Partnering Amateurs)
- The amateurs are teamed with a professional partner and together they compete for the Dimension Data Pro-Am trophy and an additional professional prize fund. They compete using the Betterball Medal scoring system whereby the lowest stroke, by either the pro or the amateur, is recorded for each hole. Amateur handicaps are taken into account.
-
There are 140 teams, each consisting of a professional and an amateur. The field is divided into two groups of 70 teams. One group contests the first round on the Lost City Golf Course while the other group begins on the Gary Player Golf Course, alternating for the second round.
-
On conclusion of the second round there is a cut to the 60th placed team. If a number of teams tie on this score, there is a count-out to determine which of the tied teams qualify to contest the third round. All teams making the cut contest the third round at the Gary Player Country Club.
-
On conclusion of the third round there will be a cut to the 25th placed team. If more than one team tie on the 25th placed team score then there will be a count-out to determine which of the teams tying on the cut score qualify to contest the final round. All teams making the cut will contest the final round at the Gary Player Country Club.
